Let’s talk about…
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects a person’s ability to focus, control impulses, and stay organised. This can make everyday tasks challenging. ADHD often starts in childhood, but some people continue to experience symptoms into adulthood.
How Common is ADHD?
Around 2 to 3% of adults have ADHD. While many children see their symptoms improve with age, about 15% still have ADHD as adults.
What are the Symptoms of ADHD?
ADHD symptoms are divided into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
-
>Difficulty concentrating
>Trouble staying focused
>Forgetfulness
>Problems organising tasks and activities
>Frequently losing things
-
>Fidgeting and restlessness.
>Difficulty sitting still for long.
>Trouble engaging in quiet activities.
>Impatience.
>Acting or speaking without thinking.
Types of ADHD
Predominantly Inattentive: Mainly issues with attention and focus.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Mainly issues with hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
Combined: A mix of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms
What causes ADHD?
-
Due to genetics, ADHD is more likely to occur in families. If you have a parent with ADHD there is a significantly higher chance of inheriting the condition.
-
Research shows that people with ADHD have differences in certain areas of the brain related to memory, focus, and decision-making.
-
Pregnancy and Birth. Factors like maternal smoking, alcohol use, stress during pregnancy, low birth weight, and prematurity are linked to ADHD.
Early Life Experiences. Growing up in a high-conflict environment or without learning good self-regulation skills can contribute to ADHD.
Exposure to Toxins. Environmental toxins like lead can impact brain development and behavior.
How is ADHD Treated?
ADHD treatment often involves a team of healthcare professionals including doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The most effective approach combines medication with psychological strategies.
Tips for Managing ADHD
Decrease Distractions: Create a workspace that is quiet and free from clutter.
Get Organised: Use time management tools like to-do lists and calendars to plan your day.
Break Tasks Down: Divide larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
Take Breaks: Short breaks can help you stay focused and energised.
Use Problem-Solving Techniques: Define problems clearly, brainstorm solutions, and try them out to see what works best.
ADHD in Children
Children with ADHD may have trouble sitting still, following directions, and staying focused on quiet tasks. They might act before thinking things through and get easily distracted, which can affect their performance in school and their ability to make friends.
